Somehow the smile upon your face
is not congruent with the trace
of something that your eyes betray,
perhaps unsure about the day.

Dear little one there on the stairs
why do you seem so full of cares?
A ragged teddy in your arm,
I pray he keeps you both from harm.

A picture taken long ago
who would have thought that it would show
what the adult would someday be
still feeling that uncertainty.
