Houston Best of Show: Stunning, But is it Really a Quilt?

Tuesday, November 9, 2004

People have been oohing and awing over the Best of Show winner at the Houston International Quilt Festival. It is a work of artistry and beauty. But there are those who question the choice. Somehow it just doesn't look like the quilts granny made. The Houston Chronicle's article, "Should quilter reap what she didn't sew?" tells all about it.

The newspaper article describes the quilt like this. "Precious Water draws attention to the worldwide shortage of water. Hand-dye painted with six shades of yellow and quilted with 200 colors of thread, the 85-by-77-inch (or roughly 7-by-6-foot) quilt shows scenes from four continents: an Indian boy drinking water, an American farmer looking over his crops, an Ecuadorian woman washing beans and a kangaroo in Australia drinking from a pond. The central painting is surrounded with droplets, ripples and waves of water." Anything quilted with 200 colors of thread sounds like a quilt to me.
