Barbara Brackman's Newsletter
Clues in Quilt Pattern

Friday, February 2, 2007

Barbara Brackman, one of the top quilt historians around, has been sharing her quilt style knowledge through newsletters. This year's newsletter will cover quilt patterns, a topic that interests so many of us. If you love learning about quilt history you don't want to miss this newsletter. It's well worth the price.

In addition you can now purchase the earlier newsletters if you missed them. All the information you need is below.

Following is the information on this upcoming newsletter.

The Quilt Detective: Clues in Quilt Pattern
A Digital Newsletter from Barbara Brackman

For the past two years, quilt historian Barbara Brackman has offered a weekly emailed course in antique quilt identification. In 2007, she plans a third edition of the Quilt Detective.

The information is a rewrite of the chapter on quilt pattern in her 1989 book Clues in the Calico, now out of print. The weekly newsletter will continue through the year 2007 with at least 36 issues. The subscription fee is $36 for the year.

The topic for 2007 will be an expansion of the information about quilt pattern.

Each week’s entry will discuss a specific pattern style such as appliqued eagles, early nine patches or popular pieced album designs with a summary of relevant information drawn from the recent literature on the topic. There will also be a section on mystery patterns---the unpublished designs that make up a good percentage of 19th-century quilts

Subscribers can store the information digitally or print it out to make a notebook of dating clues. The weekly newsletter contains about 1,000 words (a digestible amount of history) and includes at least one photographic attachment plus information about where to find related articles and quilts pictured on the world wide web.

You’ll need a modem that can process about one megabyte of information to make the photographs work well, but even with a smaller system and dial-up connection you can still receive the text and one photo easily.

If you'd like a sample of last year's newsletter, email Barbara at bbrackman@sunflower.com The weekly editions will begin in April but you can subscribe anytime during 2007 as back issues are easy to send.

Subscribe by sending a check for $36 to Barbara Brackman, 3115 W 6th St. #C-237, Lawrence, KS, 66049 (Sorry, no charge cards but I do take paypal) Do remember to include your email address on your check.
