3 Dimensional Quilts: Biscuit, Yo-Yo& Pine Cone

Wednesday, July 7, 2004 (Updated April 7, 2006)

Quilts with an added dimension are just fun and somewhat amazing to us today with our idea of what a quilt should look like.

Did you know that the Pine Burr quilt is the official state quilt of Alabama? It is also known as the Pine Cone quilt. These are made of fabric folded into triangles resulting in a pinecone look. Go to the Official Quilt of Alabama to see an example and to learn a bit of it's history. There is also a link where you can find instructions on making one.

Quilt historian, Cuesta Benberry tells us this was a popular quilt among southern African Americans in the first half or more of the 20th century. Read much more about the Pine Cone quilt at A Piece of My Soul: About Pine Cone Quilts.

Another fun dimensional quilt is the Puff or Biscuit quilt that was popular in the late 19th century and into the 20th century. With this quilt each square is a quilted puffball. Learn much more about this style quilt at Those Peculiar Biscuit and Puff Quilts

Yo Yo quilts aren't really a quilt at all but are made by sewing circles of fabric around thier outer edges then pulllling the thread tight to to make pretty little rosettes. In fact in earlier years they were called rosette quilts. These were sewn together to make bedspreads or other decorative household objects. They were introduced in the 19th century but making them didn't became a fad until the early 19th century. You can find an African American made Yo-Yo quilts here on Cuesta Benberry's site. The pdf Yo Yo Quilts has more history and instructions for making a Yo-Yo quilt.

Thank you to Hartley Bennett for the photograph of the Pine Cone Quilt and Pat Shanks for the Yo-Yo quilt.
