Quilt Notes: News and Highlights

Find the Quilts of our Past on These Sites

Monday, June 25, 2007

When I first built this website in 1996 there was next to nothing about quilt history on the Internet. I dreamed of a time when museums and other organizations would put pictures of their quilts online. That dream has been fulfilled in a very big way.

Two sites offer the opportunity to search for and view quilts. The Quilt Index has quilts from several museums and exhibits. With the photographs you will find detailed information about each quilt. Using their advanced search you can look for quilts by location, time period, project or collection. You can also browse for all these categories as well by style, techniques and purpose. This index is continually adding new collections and is an incredibly valuable resource.

The International Quilt Study Center is truly the center of quilt study in the world. This quilt study center is at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They too have a great search function including the opportunity to search by pattern, title, quiltmaker and much more. Be sure to sign up for the Quilt of the Month so you will be notifies about the featured quilt each month. It's fun to see a great quilt along with some fascinating history each time you get this email.

These two sites are great resources for students, teachers and researchers. But they are also wonderful for anyone who loved looking at quilt of the past. I should put a warning here. If you get on one of these sites and start wandering through their multitudes of quilts you may find yourself lost gazing and reading about these quilts for hours.
