America's Quilting History

Famous Dresses Myth - Quilt History Myths

MYTH #11 ~ Quilts made of fabric from dresses of famous women can be a valuable find.

The story that Queen Victoria would cut up her dresses and give them to the local patchworkers appears to be a myth while a beautiful silk "Grandmother's Fan" quilt made from actress Lillian Russell's dresses is well documented in the book, "New York Beauties: Quilts From The Empire State". African American, Elizabeth Keckley, is said to have made a quilt for Mary Todd Lincoln using scraps from the dresses Keckley made for Mrs. Lincoln.

It is very difficult to verify the history of such quilts and the key is buyer beware, such a quilt being truly from dresses of a famous personage is extremely unlikely.
